Yesterday while visiting the Kalavasos Dam, we came across a beautifull long tailed black bird with a white neck. It had a peculiar resemblance to the magpie-robins which I am used to seeing back in India, but those robins were quite small compared to this bird. So today I searched the net for this bird and I found that my guess was not quite close. These birds are the European Magpie (pica pica) which are found all around Cyprus in most seasons. A peculiar thing regarding the magpie is to watch it whenin flight since it has a fantastic wingspan of Black and white feathers. Also important to note is that the European Magpie is 45-91 cm. in length while its Indian counterpart the Oriental magpie is 19 cm.
